Water by the Spoonful  is a play written by Quiara Alegria Hudes. The second part of a trilogy, this drama depicts the everyday struggles of several people. Some are tied together by family, while others are tied through their addictions. The first portion of Hudess trilogy is titled Elliot, A Soldiers Fugue  (2007).Water by the Spoonful  won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.The final part of the cycle, The Happiest Song Plays Last, premiered in the spring of 2013. Quiara Alegria Hudes has been a rapidly rising star in the playwright community since the early 2000s. After achieving accolades and awards in regional theaters, she entered a more global spotlight with In the Heights, a Tony Award-winning musical for which she wrote the book. The Basic Plot At first, Water by the Spoonful  seems to be set in two different worlds, with two different storylines. The first setting is our everyday world of work and family. In that storyline, young Iraq War veteran Elliot Ortiz deals with a terminally ill parent, a nowhere job at a sandwich shop, and a burgeoning career in modeling. All of this is intensified by recurring memories (ghostly hallucinations) of a man he killed during the war. The second storyline takes place online. Recovering drug addicts interact in an internet forum that has been created by Odessa, Elliots birth mother (although the audience does not learn her identity for a few scenes). In the chat room, Odessa goes by her username HaikuMom. Although she may have failed as a mother in real life, she becomes an inspiration to ex-crack-heads hoping for a new chance. The online inhabitants include: Orangutan: a junkie whose road to recovery has led her in search of her birth parents who live somewhere.ChutesLadders: a recovering drug addict who maintains close online connections, but has yet to take them to the next level off-line.Fountainhead: is the newest member to join the group, but his naivetà © and arrogance at first repulse the online community. Honest self-reflection is demanded before recovery can begin. Fountainhead, a once successful businessman who hides his addiction from his wife, has a hard time being honest with anyone—especially himself. The Main Characters The most invigorating aspect of Hudess play is that although each a character is deeply flawed, the spirit of hope lurks within every tormented heart. Spoiler Alert: Some of the scripts surprises will be given away as we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each character. Elliot Ortiz:  Throughout the play, usually during quiet moments of reflection, a ghost for the Iraq War visits Elliot, echoing words in Arabic. It is implied that Elliot killed this person during the war  and that the Arabic words may have been the last thing spoken before the man was shot. At the beginning of the play, Elliot learns that the man he killed was simply asking for his passport, suggesting that Elliot may have killed an innocent man. In addition to this mental hardship, Elliot still grapples with the physical effects of his war wound, an injury that leaves him with a limp. His months of physical therapy and four different surgeries led to an addiction to painkillers. On top of those hardships, Elliot also deals with the death of Ginny, his biological aunt and adoptive mother. When she dies, Elliot becomes bitter and frustrated. He wonders why Ginny, a selfless, nurturing parent died while Odessa Ortiz, his recklessly neglectful birth mother, remains alive. Elliot reveals his strength throughout the second half of the play as he comes to terms with loss and finds the capacity to forgive. Odessa Ortiz:  In the eyes of her fellow recovering addicts, Odessa (aka, HaikuMom) appears saintly. She encourages empathy and patience within others. She censors profanity, anger, and hateful comments from her online forum. And she doesnt turn away from pompous newcomers such as Fountainhead but instead welcomes all lost souls to her internet community. She has been drug-free for over five years. When Elliot aggressively confronts her, demanding that she pay for the floral arrangement at the funeral, Odessa is at first perceived as a victim and Elliot as the callous, verbal abuser. Meaning of the Title However, when we learn of Odessas back story, we learn how her addiction ravaged not only her life but the lives of her family. The play gets its title Water by the Spoonful  from one of Elliots earliest memories. When he was a little boy, he and his younger sister were gravely ill. The doctor instructed Odessa to keep the children hydrated by giving them one spoonful of water every five minutes. At first, Odessa followed the instructions. But her devotion did not last for long. Compelled to leave in search of her next drug fix, she abandoned her children, leaving them locked in their home until the authorities knocked down the door. By that time, Odessas 2-year-old daughter had died of dehydration. After being confronted with the memories of her past, Odessa tells Elliot to sell her only possession of value: her computer, her key to ongoing recovery. After she gives that up, she returns once again to drug abuse. She overdoses, verging on the brink of death. Yet even then, all is not lost. She manages to hang onto life, Elliot realizes that despite her terrible life choices, he still cares for her, and Fountainhead (the addict who seemed beyond help) stays by Odessas side, endeavoring to steer them into the waters of redemption.

This can usually be seen as a positive, by providing much needed information to the public in times of a crisis, or joyous celebrations of achievements. This paper will discuss the views of two components of Durkheim’s theory of suicide (Egoistic and Anomic) and how they are the most dominant forms of suicide today and how they link to the events in our current society leading to the increase in teen suicides. This theory will be used to attempt to answer why teen suicide is on the r ise. Durkheim’s theories will be emphasised by relating his theory of suicide to two recent cases of teen suicide in Canada; Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd- both were cyber bullied to the point of taking their own lives. Organizational Structure A business’ organizational structure is critical to the business and the employees. An organizational structure is â₠¬Å"the manner in which an organization arranges (or rearranges) itself† (Fontaine, 2007, p. 6). At Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) the organizational structure that they operate under is a functional structure. A functional organizational structure is a structure where the position and function of employees are clearly specified. The business is divided into separate departments with specific tasks (Pearce ; Robinson, 2009). KFF has a hierarchy of authority, which defines who is in charge of which fundamentals and who reports to whom. The decision making, ideas, and plans come from the top hierarchy, in this case Kathy Kudler, the president of KFF. KFF has a vertical dimension with several levels of management. Kudler Fine Foods has a total of three stores that make up the framework of the organizational structure. For instance, the president is at top working with the three store managers. Each store has the same structure hierarchy beginning with the store manager. Under the store manager is the assistant store manager and continues to branch out to the four different department managers – produce and foodstuffs; spirits, cheeses, and wine; meats, and seafood; bakery, and pastries. The key positions that hold the structure together is the administration staff consisting of the president, director of administration and human resources, finance, and accounting, and store operations. Many levels of management exist in the structure. Every employee has a defined role, all of which with the common goal of meeting the needs of the consumer. Kudler Fine Foods operates in a centralized manner allowing KFF to have more upper management control. With a functional structure every employee’s role is important to the vision and goal of the business. Collaboration Process â€Å"Today’s enterprises are striving to create more specialized features through globalization and  collaboration† (Park, 2003, p. 5). Several steps are in the collaboration process. The first step is for all the people in the process to come to an agreement on the collaboration process. The second step is for all the people involved in the process to understand the need of reaching the same goal. The third step in the process is for all people involved to work together and share the responsibilities in making the decisions. The fourth step is to make sure all people have resources, which they intend to share with the others involved. The inventory manager will assist by advising the team what products are selling and what products are not. The product manager may determine a better position in the store to make sure the non-selling items sell or the two individuals may cut back on that particular product to lessen the overhead. Kudler Fine Foods will need to implement an action plan to keep customers coming back, but also to introduce new products to the customers. Kudler Fine Foods has initiated a frequent shopper program, which enables customers to earn rewards with purchases. Rewards are coupons or a certain dollar amount off the entire shopping order once a certain level of purchases is met. KFF must also increase the marketing of the company and the rewards program to make sure the customers aware of the program. The marketing manager can collaborate with the inventory and purchasing managers to discuss how to best implement a successful marketing plan. Setting these processes in motion will give KFF an advantage above the competition Lateral and Vertical Collaboration Lateral collaboration occurs between the equivalent level of employees within the organization, and vertical collaboration would be between employees with a superior and subordinate relationship. An example of vertical collaboration occurred when Kathy Kudler coordinates the selection of sale merchandise with the store managers during the weekly operations meetings. Kathy has oversight of the entire organization and directs the merchandise and sale processes with her subordinate store managers. Good lateral collaboration is illustrated by cooperation between store managers in facilitating resupply of advertised merchandise between stores, to the stores with a higher demand. Kudler Fine Foods has no consistent purchasing procedure. The three department managers at each store independently place orders with suppliers based on the department manager’s subjective assessment of store requirements. Further, the onus is on the department manager â€Å"to obtain the best pricing, quality, and delivery possible† (Apollo Group, 2009, Supply Chain Overview, para. 1). This purchasing structure lacks both vertical and lateral collaboration and relies on the individual department managers to take additional steps to coordinate purchasing with other department managers. No mechanism for department managers to compare or discuss store needs among counterparts and no consistent pricing structure between store locations. A vertical disconnect is evident in that Kathy Kudler also places orders independent from the store managers. An action plan to improve both vertical and lateral collaboration within Kudler Fine Foods involves improvements to the purchasing process. Department managers would be required to have a department manager weekly review meeting where store merchandise needs, trends, and purchase requirements would be compared, discussed, and coordinated laterally into a purchase order plan. This purchase plan would be submitted vertically to a central purchasing agent at the administrative level who would facilitate the negotiation and purchase from suppliers to ensure the best pricing and quality. Key Stakeholders Kathy Kudler is the founder of KFF. She is the primary stakeholder, and because the company is a privately owned entity there are no shareholders in the company. The company does have investors who have a stake in the company. The investors or stakeholders are both internal and external and are monitored by the company. The stakeholders include the employees, consumers, suppliers, banks, and Kathy Kudler, and each can have an affect or be affected by the company. When Kathy first decided to create Kudler fine foods, she obtained financing. This is done generally through banks. Banking institutions will extend credit terms to consumers such as Kathy. Kathy can also go to these banks when she is obtaining funding for new stores or launching new products. Banking institutions can also help with extending the line of credit when peek seasons are low and profits might not be as large. The main point of financing comes from banking institutions. The staff of KFF is critical to the daily operations of the company. These employees have direct contact with consumers and serve as a primary point of contact for Kathy and consumers. Employees contribute to labor and the expertise to the company. In daily activities these employees are responsible for the growth of the stores, the appearance stores, maintenance in the stores, training new staff, and picking up the slack when other employees are not available. Because Kathy is not available daily to complete these activities it is important for the staff to complete these activities and ensure the success of the company. Consumers are a large part of the company, it is important for the consumers needs to be met, and this is done typically through purchasing goods. Customers rely on employees and Kathy to provide the goods that they are willing to purchase. Customers’ requests need to be met and Kudler has to decide whether the requests of the customer can be met or are feasible for the company to provide. If the products are not available to the consumer the company needs to look into alternate options to solve the problem and to keep the customer. Suppliers can also play an important role in the company. These suppliers are the backbone of the company and provide all the products necessary for the company to be successful. KFF have suppliers for wine, cheese, fresh produce, organic meats, and all bakery items. These come from both local and national suppliers. The local products ensure the highest quality of products and these suppliers need to remain on good financial terms to continue to build a business relationship. Conclusion Kathy Kudler has achieved success by hiring managers who take social responsibility seriously because he or she already has firm intuitions about what constitutes ethical and unethical conduct (Heath, 2006). The success of the company has many factors that contribute. The way that the stakeholders of the company relate and work together are important factors in any companies’ success. KFF has achieved the success the company has because of their ability to interact positively with all the stakeholders in the company. Miller presents the themes of truth and justice in The Crucible Essay In this essay, I will be looking at how Miller presents the themes of truth and justice in The Crucible. To achieve this, I will examine a variety of characters including John Proctor because Miller uses his characters actions to convey the themes. Before I conclude, I will compare Millers work to other plays. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is not an accurate historical account, but rather an accurate portrayal of the Salem witch trials of 1692 in Massachusetts. Miller makes minor changes to the events that occurred during the trials such as the genuine names of the victims, the total number of people that were executed, and the correct ages of the characters. During the time of the witch trials, people follow their strict Puritan beliefs. They believe in hard work, prayer, Bible study, and introspection. Miller tells of how the Salem minister catches several young girls dancing in the forest. This is a sign that the girls are practicing evil, because dancing is not permitted in the Puritan faith. The witch trials were a time of much grief, because many innocent people died without proof and guilt ruined many lives. Miller tells in detail about the witch trials and how the townspeople accept guilt of witches without evidence. People use witchcraft to gain vengeance. One of the most import ant themes in Arthur Millers The Crucible is that good, mercy, and justice do not always triumph over evil. Miller uses his character John Proctor to represent justice in his work, The Crucible. John Proctor opposes authority in Millers play. He is portrayed as the protagonist. From the general feel of the scene, we can gather that the common room of Proctors house is cold, empty and unwelcoming. This parallels with the relationship between John and Elizabeth. Theres is a great amount of tension between the pair, and they idly make chit-chat at the table, as they feel they need to: Proctor: Pray now for a good summer. Elizabeth: Aye It should be noted that it is Proctor who is trying to make conversation; Elizabeth is spoiling his attempts with one-word answers. Proctor is feeling frustrated because Elizabeth is not acknowledging that Proctor is trying his hardest to repair the relationship. He is forever claiming his desire to please Elizabeth: I mean to please you Elizabeth. Proctor The audience would get frustrated with Elizabeth for not forgiving him. Although Proctor is guilty for the false relationship with Abigail, he is going below his stature to earn trust and respect from Elizabeth. This shows the personal integrity of John Proctor. He loathes hypocrisy because they are testifying to something that is not true. Proctor has strong moral principles with one exception. Hale asks him to recite the Ten Commandments and he forgets one of them, which in his case is the most important, Thou shalt not commit adultery. He denies all accusations of his affair with Abigail until the trial. He then admits to the affair in order to save his name and his wife. His confession shows that his principles are stronger than anything else is. Though John Proctor tries to do the right thing in the end, his death shows that justice does not always triumph over evil. This also shows that Miller presents themes through the actions of the characters. Judge Danforth is a prominent character in the play, and one of main persecutors of those accused of witchcraft. He seems a hard man, and one not willing to change his views. He is the main judge we see in the play, and is in charge of hearing all evidence against people, and judging them. The simple fact that he does not let any one of those accused off the charges unless they confess creates the impression that he is a hard man, with very little sympathy or any kinder human traits. Miller includes notes about many of the characters in the stage directions, and those of Danforth give an instant impression about him. Danforth is a grave man in his sixties, of some humour and sophistication, that does not, however interfere with an exact loyalty to his position and his cause. He brings religion into his arguments a lot, mainly criticising those who do not attend church regularly. He seems to have more respect for those who are what he thinks of as good Christians. Danforth: You are in all respects a gospel Christian? Procter: I am, sir Danforth: Such a Christian that will not come to church but once a month? Danforth: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Plough on Sunday? In this last quote, Danforth seems disbelieving that a man who considered himself a Christian could plough on a Sunday. While nowadays this would be acceptable, in the days Miller was writing about, a man generally could not call himself a Christian unless he adopted a rather strict way of life, and obeyed the rigid rules of the church. Judge Danforth wants to respect Christians, and while using an apparent lack of Christianity against the people accused of witchcraft, he seems to admire the use of it to accuse them, just. When the girls are questioned, they frequently protest I am with God or I am with God now. Danforth seems to believe them when they say this. He seems to want to believe they are with God although he refuses to believe it about any accused. This seems quite hypocritical. However, if he believes that any people accused were with God and announced them innocent, he would be accusing the girls of lying. This would mean he did not believe that they were with God. Therefore, Danforth feels he has to choose someone to believe and stick to their point of view. Believing the girls,  would certainly be a popular decision, at least at first, as the public would be keen to carry out Gods work and condemn who they thought were involved in witchcraft. He shows some kind human traits, although the select conditions under which he does this, makes it seem a lot more false. When he is talking to Goody Proctor, he seems kind and respectful.
